The Federal Highway Administration's Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices is the standard guide for road markings but each state also has its own regulations as well. Common markings on multilane roads include double solid lines that prohibit lane changing, solid with single broken lines for one sided passing lanes, single lines for discouraging lane changing and single broken lines for passing in either direction. Stop lines and crosswalks (with our without zebra stripes) are placed to minimize wear on the road markings by traffic.
